Project description

For this project, which I completed during my sophomore year as a graphic design student, I created three unique magazine layouts inspired by three of my all-time favorites. I was tasked with picking a theme for each spread, and let me tell you, it was a creative journey.

First up, my favorite designer Matthew Carter. I chose his classic font, Georgia, to create a clean, timeless vibe for the layout. The whole thing just clicked, giving me a chance to highlight my typography skills in the most stylish way possible.

Then, I ventured into the world of street art with Banksy. This spread was a bit of an enigma, just like the artist himself, with bold, eye-catching visuals that made you stop and think. Banksy’s work is all about making a statement, and I wanted the layout to do the same—powerful and striking, with an undercurrent of mystery.

And last but not least, I dove into the magical world of anime, inspired by the one and only Hayao Miyazaki. I created a concept that celebrated the artistry and imagination behind his masterpieces. The layout was whimsical and dreamlike, filled with gorgeous, flowing elements that brought the beauty of his work to life on the page.

Throughout the project, I focused on creating a smooth and immersive reading experience with well-thought-out design principles. Each spread had its own vibe, yet all stayed connected through thoughtful composition and attention to detail. It was about more than just looking good—it was about telling a story, engaging the reader, and showing off the creative side of design.

Challenge

The original project required the creation of a fresh, engaging magazine layout from scratch, ensuring that each of the three designs not only adhered to design principles but also stood out with visual appeal and ease of navigation. The challenge was to effectively combine various typographic techniques and layout elements to create a cohesive yet dynamic final result.

Ways of Working

To approach this project, I utilized professional design techniques, such as "justified text," "leading," and "callouts," to ensure clarity and engagement across the spreads. I focused on maintaining consistent visual identity with "headers" and "footers" and paid attention to readability by carefully using "subheads" and avoiding "widow" and "orphan" lines. The design process involved iterative refinement, ensuring that each layout felt balanced, immersive, and visually cohesive.
